Developmental Play: Fashion Designers

During Development Play, the Preps were asked to create clothing using only newspaper and masking tape. One person acted as the model, while the other two group members worked collaboratively to design some fabulous new clothes. This involved ripping and fitting the newspaper, adjusting to ensure that the clothes fit together and altering the clothing to make them more unique.

Here is some of the clothes that the preps designed and modelled...

Where is Muffin McLay?

During weeks 3 and 4, the students began to explore positional language in Maths.

On the walk, they were asked to describe where McLay was at certain points (without pointing).
Can you describe where he is?

"McLay is next to the tree"
"McLay is beside the tree"
"McLay is in front of the house"

Students recorded their sentences on sheets and carefully drew his location.

When we arrived at the playground we found silly McLay stuck on the monkey bars.

Can you describe where he is?

"McLay is on top of the monkey bars"
"McLay is on top of Ben"
"McLay is above Ben"

Once McLay was helped down from the bars, we had a little bit of fun ourselves.

But right at the end, naughty McLay ran off again, can you see where he is?

"McLay is between the two posts"
"McLay is on the driveway"
"McLay is in front of the house"

Our New Sandpit!

Today during Developmental Play, the Preps had fun exploring their new sandpit in the Prep courtyard. We built sandcastles, tunnels, mountains and cities.

"We had heaps of fun"

"Thanks Mr Bove for building it for us"

Walking to the Hair Salon

For our walk for Week 2, the preps went to visit their local hair salon, which is owned by one of the preps Dad.

We travelled out of the school and onto Moreland Road, being careful to stay with our partners.

Once we reach Sydney Road, we stopped to count the number of different things that went past (for example: red cars, trucks, bicycles). We were very excited when we got a wave from the Fireman in the Fire Truck.

Once we has finished collecting our data, we walked along Sydney Road towards the Hair Salon. We were very excited and were welcomed with a big smile.

We learnt about what materials a Hairdresser needs and also what things you can have done (cut, colour, make up and nails).

The data that we collected was used in our maths lessons, where we put it into a graph and created our own questions about it.

We can't wait for our next walk,

Our First Community Walk

This term the Preps will be going on community walks as part of their inquiry unit, and today we had a practice to get used to walking with a clipboard and collecting information.

We practiced walking in a line, staying with our partner and ensuring that there were no gaps. Once everyone was ready, we set off through the office out onto De Carle St.

Our first stop was at the house next to the school, where they were getting their olive tree pruned. The Preps stopped and drew a picture of this, using labels to describe the details of their drawing.

Once we had finished our walk we headed back to school and discussed things that we had seen, heard or smelt along the way. We collected lavender and we talked about how it smelt and where they had seen it before and how "bees love it".

We cannot wait to go on our walk next week!

First it was the girls turn...

And then the boys...
